1st Child's View of Corruption (CVoC) Lecture

Karachi Cadet School

on 30th May 2011

TI-Pakistan organized the 1st lecture under “Child’s View of Corruption (CVoC)” project on May 30, 2011 at Karachi Cadet School. The lecture on the subject of corruption was delivered by Prof. Kafeel Ahmad, ex Principal Jinnah Degree College, Karachi.

Prof Kafeel started the lecture by discussing the different factors affecting the education system and said that in Pakistan, corruption in education is institutionalized in such a way that it has become the norm and now-a-days students have started taking shortcuts instead of working hard to achieve their goals.

He placed great emphasis on Moral Corruption and told children that the concept of corruption is not just limited to bribing officials for getting the work done but even if we throw away litter on streets or if we violate a traffic signal, that is also corruption and hence, introspection appears to be the most important thing for gradual eradication of corruption from our society.

Prof. Ahmed also discussed basic human rights and how they are denied due to unawareness. He said that denial of such rights for personal benefits is also a kind of corruption and therefore we need to be fully aware of the rights so that we don’t become yet another victim of corrupt minds. While speaking about the importance of self accountability, he said that it is a common trait in our society that we keep blaming authorities, the government and people at the helm of affairs for waste of resources but we never look into ourselves that how we sometimes; knowingly or unknowingly, do the same.

He also highlighted the individual corruption and planned policy corruption. Individual corruption can be cheating, fleecing, bunking classes and other such situations. Planned corruption on the other hand is done by making certain policies for the education system through which no goals can be achieved.
He concluded the session by saying that determination, honesty and hard work takes an individual through the right path to the heights of success which gradually have a positive impact on macro level.

An interactive session also took place at the end of the lecture. Students were asked what they learnt from the lecture and they seemed very eager to share their experiences. Students shared their learning and viewpoint on corruption. Prof. Ahmed said that the way students have taken part in the session shows that they also have serious concern about the issue of corruption which is as serious to the society as poison is to a body. Ms. Eram Irfan, Headmistress of Karachi Cadet School presented the plaque to the speaker at the end of the lecture. The event was attended by 26 students of the school.
